NUsport offers a wide variety of sporting clubs from Badminton to Rugby.

University sporting clubs have been established primarily to provide sporting opportunities for students of the University and membership of University sporting clubs is generally not available to members of the community.

Badminton Club

The Badminton Club is dedicated to everyone who is interested in badminton or would like to try a new sport.  There is no need to worry about lacking the ability as those who join this Club vary greatly in skills.  We cater to a wide range of players from the social ones who just want to hit a shuttle round to those serious competitors who are looking for a real challenge. Everyone is welcome! 

Season and training commences: 6 March 2010.  Training venue: The Forum Sports & Aquatic Centre, University.  Training times: Saturday 3.00 pm - 6.00 pm and Sunday 10.00 am - 1.00 pm.  Club membership fee: $10.00/annum; $3.00 session.

Baseball Club

The University Baseball Club has been competing in the Newcastle Baseball Associations competition for over 20 years with great success.  In 2010 we will be entering teams into all six grades, so no matter what level you play at (or if you have never played before and what to give it a try) there is a team to suit your skills. Games are played on Saturdays and Sundays depending on the grade.

Training commences: 31 January 2010. Training venue: University No 3 Oval. Training times:Wednesday nights 6.30 pm to 8.00 pm and Sunday 4.00 pm - 5.30pm. Club membership fee: $160.00

Boat Club (Rowing)

The Newcastle University Boat Club is both a sporting and social Club.  We attend six or seven regattas every year including the Australian University Games.  We have a range of boats to suit all abilities with coaching available for everyone.  During the year we have many social events, the most formal of which is the End of Year Dinner held in November.  We row on the Hunter River at Berry Park (near Maitland).  It is a half hour drive to the Club from the University. Cricket Club

The University Cricket Club is now in its 54th year and always welcomes new players to its ranks.  The Club fields teams in the Newcastle and District Cricket Association competition in first to fourth grades and has a fifth grade team in the Newcastle City and Suburban competition.  

Season commences: October, with pre-season training starting in September.  Training venue: University No 1 Oval.  Training times: 5.00 pm Tuesday and Friday during cricket season. New players please contact Club President Ben Smee.

Fencing Club

The Fencing Club welcomes all beginners throughout the year, and offers a relaxed and friendly training environment. Students are free to take Fencing as seriously or lightheartedly as they please.  For the more competitively minded there are two in-house competitions each year as well as numerous opportunities to compete in various state or national competitions.  The Club provides all necessary equipment.  Club membership fee: TBC. Contact the Club for training information.

Gymsports Club

The Gymsports Club incorporates all areas of gymnastics such as men's and women's artistic, rhythmic, acrobatics, trampolining and tumbling; as well as circus arts including aerial work, juggling and fire-twirling.  We cater for all ages and abilities and welcome anyone from beginners to advanced.  The focus is on fun and skill development and our training sessions centre around this. If you are looking to learn to flip, tumble, fly, cartwheel, bounce, balance or even increase flexibility and strength, then the Gymsports Club is for you.  For those that like to get a little more serious there is the opportunity of competing in masters games and in social competitions with other Universities.  Training sessions are held once a week but can increase to twice a week if there's enough interest.

Hockey - Men's

The Newcastle University Men's Hockey Club consists of 6 teams from premier to 6th grade. It is a competitive Club that supports the 'social development' of University students.  We are closely affiliated with the Newcastle University Women's Hockey Club. Playing with the Club provides opportunities to meet new people, play at your level and represent the University at University Games.

Season commences: March - September. Training commences: Pre-season fitness February and field training March. Training venue: Pre-season fitness Merewether baths and field training Newcastle International Hockey Centre, Turton Road Broadmeadow. Training times: Pre-season fitness TBC and field training 8 - 9pm Thursdays. Club membership fee: Approximately $340 Students and $370 Associates.

Hockey - Women's

The Women's Hockey Club caters for players of all levels. We have six teams from Premier League through to 6th grade. The Club has a strong social network holding a number of functions throughout the year in conjunction with the Men's Hockey Club.

Jujutsu Club

Jujutsu is a traditional Japanese martial art which uses strikes, joint locks, strangulations and throws to overcome an opponent.  This art is suitable for men and women. The Newcastle University Jujutsu Club is a branch of the International Jujutsu Institute (IJI).  The Club conducts an introductory course commencing in week one of each semester.  The course is designed to teach the fundamentals of Jujutsu to a complete beginner and runs for 12 weeks.

Mountaineering Club

The Newcastle University Mountaineering Club (NUMC) organises a variety of outdoor activities for a broad range of experiences including bush walking, rock climbing, water sports (kayaking, canoeing), canyoning, mountain biking and the list goes on.  Our members also have the benefit of cheap hire of adventure equipment and contact with a network of people who are also into exploring the outdoors. Training commences: Climbing wall opens Tuesday (February; no training as such). Training venue: Regular subsidised climbing at The Forum (University), other trips and activities run to locations around Newcastle and beyond.

NUDES is a fantastic way to get involved in the sport of SCUBA diving.  In joing NUDES you will get to meet great people and have a whole bunch of fun exploring life under the sea and other social activities.

NUDES is operated by students for students, with plenty of affordable diving, snorkelling, trips away and social nights.

The gear store is open every Tuesday from 6.00 pm - 7.00 pm. Anyone is welcome to come in and talk to us to find out more about the club. We are located behind the forum - Follow the change room signs, until you reach the stairs. We are located just inside the blue door underneath the stairs.

Rugby League Club

Newcastle University Rugby League Club participates in the state wide Tertiary Cup competition.  All registered players in the competition become eligible to participate in the tertiary representative program at state and national level.

Rugby Union Club

Kicking off in 1955, the Club is the oldest continuously functioning University sporting Club with a proud history.  The Club has nutured many young players, including Wallabies and Wallaroos, and has built an enviable reputation in the Newcastle & Hunter Rugby competition. Season 2009 was very successful with all teams playing in the finals series.  Highlights from the 2009 season include: third place in teh Club Championship, First Grade - semi finalists; Second Grade - Preliminary Finalists and finishing third; Colts - runners up in the Grand Final; Third Grade Finalist and finishing third and the Women's team semi finalists. Both men and women players gained Regional, NSW Country and National Prepresentative honours. Tobie McGann was a member of the Australian Sevens team that won the inaugural Womens World Sevens Wallaroos against New Zealand. Tobie McGann was again selected for the Wallaroos but had to withdraw though injury. Matthew Dun and David Kennedy were selected for the Australian Rugby Shield winning NSW Country Cockatoos for the second year running. It is never too late to register and become part of the Club. New players are welcome as well as those returning for another season with the galloping seahorses. There are many varied social events throughout the season including a Golf Day at the Shortland Waters course. The University of Newcastle Men's Soccer Club is planning to field 6 teams this year including Grade Finalists 1st Grade, catering for all ages, skill and fitness levels. Trials and training for First Division start before University recommences for 2010 so don't miss out! Soccer - Women's

If you are looking to make new friends in a fun atmosphere - Uni Women's Soccer Club is for you. With over 80 members every year you will make a whole lotof new friends around campus from various backgrounds and degrees, and while you are doing that you might just get fit and learn a new skill or two as well!

Newcastle University Women's soccer club caters for all ages and abilities, from experienced rep players through to players who have never kicked a ball before. We have 5 - 7 graded teams every year ranging from A grade to K grade which enab les every person who registers the opportunity to find a team that matches their ability.

Although the soccer part of the Club is important, the social aspect is also encouraged. As a Club this year we plan to hold trivia nights, scavenger hunts, karaoke nights, themed parties and of course our annual end of year ball...All of this relates back to our Club motto "Play hard, party harder".

Softball Club

The University Softball Club is a competitive, social and well respected Club that is always looking for new players, from beginners to representative players.  Our head coach Bruce Engert is a skilled coach with over 10 years coaching experience. The Club is the sister club of the University Baseball Club and hold regular social events such as trivia nights, BBQs, presentation nights and other organised social events throughout the season.  With many sponsors on board including The Bennett Hotel in Hamilton, we are looking forward to having many entertaining years to come both on and off the diamond!

Season: Summer, running from October through to March.
Training: Once a week commencing in September at the University ovals.
Club membership fee: $100 - $120 (students) plus equipment/uniform, prices for non-students are available upon request.
Competition: Games are played on Saturdays at Stevenson Park, Industrial Highway, Mayfield.

Squash Club

Want to play one of the fastest and most challenging sports on campus? Join the University of Newcastle Squash Club. The Club trains twice a week.  Club training caters for all levels, from beginners through to advanced players. Members can enter two types of competition: a friendly "in-house" competition or an inter-district competition. The Club also enters about half a dozen teams in the inter-district competition each year.

Season commences: 15 February 2010. Training commences: 1st week of University semester. Training venue: Squash Courts, University of Newcastle. Training times Sunday 10am-12pm and Tuesday 7.30pm-9.30pm. Club membership fee: $30.

Tae Kwon Do

The University Tae Kwon Do Club is aimed at providing a great Tae Kwon Do training centre for Newcastle University students on campus. The Club is open to all students with or without any training experience, just the desire to learn a martial art, get fit and have fun doing it. The Club provides a strong base in the Korean martial art as well as an excellent social environment for its members. Outside normal training sessions there are many activities including BBQ's, weekends away, wine tours, dinners, movie nights and special training events just to name a few. Just contact the Club member listed and start the learning adventure. It's a definite must for those interested in doing more and being more through their University education years.

Ultimate Frisbee Club

NUDISCS is Newcastle University's Ultimate Frisbee Club.  Ultimate Frisbee is a self refereed non-contact sport that combines parts of Australian Rules Football, Netball and Gridiron. Highly athletic at the top levels, and thoroughly enjoying no matter your skill level, ultimate is a sport for everyone. Over the past two years the Club has been growing strongly with increased membership and impressive showings at regional and national competitions. Our social leagure of a Monday night runs from 7 - 9pm on Oval number 2 and all University students and staff are welcome to attend. Skill level is not important, completely new players are most welcome. Ultimate is one of the cheapest sports on campus and we play year round. Every Monday night of the University semesters, ultimate is on (weather pending). Newcastle University also sends a team to play of a Wednesday night at the Newcastle Town combined league. Over the past couple of years, the Newcastle University team has been a team to beat in the league and widely regarded as the most spirited team to play against.

Volleyball Club

The Newcastle University Volleyball Club (NUVC) aims to enhance the skills and fitness levels of all members in a fun, friendly and social environment.  Training commences 10 March, and is held on Wednesdays (3 - 5pm) and Fridays (4-6pm) at The Forum Sports & Aquatic Centre, University of Newcastle.  This great game encourages teamwork and uni social life by facilitating weekly matches and group training sessions for all levels! 

Season Commences: 10 March 2010 (Second week of Uni semester).  Training Venue: The Forum Sports & Aquatic Centre, University.  Training Times: Wednesday (3-5pm) and Friday (4-6pm).  Club membership fee: $30.00 full year.

Water Polo Club

The Newcastle University Water Polo Club caters for all skill levels, from beginners through to the experienced.  The Club currently has a men's and women's team playing in the local Newcastle Water Polo Association Competition and is looking to attract more players, with the hope of entering more teams into the competition in the future. A men's and women's team are also selected to attend Australian University Games each year.
